Arsenal could go back in for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano next summer when his release clause drops to £53m as Unai Emery looks for more quality in central defence

Asernal will have the chance to sign RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano next summer for a fraction of the price they would have had to pay earlier this year.Unai Emery targeted the highly-regarded French centre back in the summer as he looked to strengthen the heart of his defence. The Gunners had a £55million bid rejected by the German side, who were holding out for a figure close to his release clause – reportedly in the region of £82m.

Emery opted to sign David Luiz from Chelsea instead but early season indications are that the Brazilian is not good enough to solve Arsenal’s defensive issues. There is no surprise then that the Gunners are being linked with a move for Upamecano and they may be able to get him for a fee closer to £55m next summer.According to French newspaper L’Equipe, via the sun,his release clause will drop to £53m unless he signs a new contract before the end of the season.RB Leipzig signed him for £9m from sister club Red Bull Salzburg in 2017 and he has risen through the ranks to become one of the most sought after young defenders in world football. He has only made two appearances so far this season though after missing the first four games with a knee injury.
